My family and I love cruising. If you've read my other blog posts, you know that this is one of our favorite ways to travel, and Royal Caribbean is our very favorite line to travel with. We love the ships, we love Crown & Anchor, we love the perks, and now there's even more to love with the ability to bid on upgrades using Royal Caribbean Royal Up. (read more)
THE ROYAL CARIBBEAN ROYAL UP PROGRAM
What isRoyal Caribbean Royal Up?
In a nutshell, it's an easy way for you to bid on an upgrade for your next Royal Caribbean cruise. It's not a guarantee, but if you are happy with the room you currently have and are okay occupying it for your sailing, Royal Up is a great way to *maybe* get a better room for a fraction of the cost of booking that room as a guarantee.
If you definitely want a certain room, I recommend booking it, don't try to upgrade to it because there is no guarantee, and I have yet to get an upgrade (though I am hopeful with my latest bid, and I'll keep you in the loop).
In this post, I'm going to talk about how the program works, how to use the site to put in a bid, my past bid, current bid, and all the little details you might not be aware of.

Bidding on an upgrade with Royal Up is simple. All you need to do is go to theRoyal Up siteand enter in your reservation number and last name.
If you are eligible for an upgrade, you will be brought to a page that lists the room you currently have booked, as well as each room you're able to bid on.
Here you can see that I have a Panoramic Suite (No Balcony) which I booked last year while we were in Canada on Anthem of the Seas.
Since it will be myself, my two boys, and my mother on this sailing, I want a room where we have a bit of space and the boys have a bit of privacy. This room does have a curtained off area with a set of bunk beds, and that's perfect for my kids to be able to "get away" from the adults when they need some alone time.
Because of that, I will not be bidding on anything that offers less privacy. Let's talk about the rooms I am able to place bids for.

ROYAL UP ROYAL CARIBBEAN UPGRADE
Your room availability will be contingent upon the room you've already booked.
If you've booked the lowest tier of room, you will have more options for upgrades. An interior room would be able to book outside view, balcony, suite. An outside view would be able to book balcony and suite, etc.
Since I already have a suite, I am only able to bid on suites that are more expensive than the one I currently have.
Royal Up is not meant to let you bid on rooms cheaper than what you already have booked. They won't be issuing any cash back.
I have three rooms available for bidding. There is a Grand Suite - 2 Bedroom.
An Owner's Suite.
And a Grand Suite.
UPGRADING ON ROYAL CARIBBEAN
PLACING YOUR BID
Each room available for your to bid on has both a minimum bid and a maximum bid. Since I only want a room that would give us more space, I will only be bidding on the 2 Bedroom Suite. However, bidding on multiple rooms will increase the odds of your getting an upgrade.
You will only be charged once. So if you win a bid, you'll be charged for that room on your credit card and any other bids will be cancelled.
You are not able to reject a bid if you win, so bid wisely and only bid on rooms you'd really like to upgrade to.
The amount you bid will be multiplied by two. The amount is per person, for the entire cruise, not per day, and it's ONLY for the first two people on your booking.
So, if you take a cruise with yourself, your spouse, and your kids, you will all be moved to the new room, but only yourself and your spouse will be charged (or whichever two people are listed first on the reservation).
Higher bids obviously result in a better ability to win a bid, and lower bids will be less likely.
I bid the maximum of $900, for a total of $1800 should I win the bid.
According to the slider, as you can see, my bid is strong.
Now, I've been researching, so I can tell you that the bidding can definitely change. I'll explain in the next section.
CAN YOU LEAVE YOUR BIRD ALONE WHILE YOU GO ON YOUR CRUISE?CHANGES TO MINIMUM AND MAXIMUM BIDS
It's now three weeks out from the latest cruise I've bid on, a nine day Southern Caribbean aboard Explorer of the Seas.
My original bid range was $650 at the lowest, $900 at the maximum. After reading around onCruise CriticI saw that some people noticed their bid increments could change as the cruise got closer.
This could mean that the maximum got increased, or that the minimum got increased.
It does NOT mean your bid is automatically increased, that won't happen.
Let's say your minimum bid (the amount RC determines as the least amount you can bid) is $650. You bid $650, but then you go back in and look a few days later. The minimum bid is now $655. It doesn't mean you've automatically lost the bid, it only means that RC is trying to see if someone else will pay more.
You can choose to bid a new minimum, or you can leave it.
This could also happen on the maximum. Let's say the original maximum bid was $900, but you go back to the site a few days later and see that the new maximum is $950.
It only means that RC is trying to see if people will bid more.
You can choose to increase your maximum, or leave it as is.
I can speak first hand about this because, when I put my bid in initially, the minimum was $650. Now, however, when I look, the minimum, as you can see in the picture below, is $655.
The maximum has not changed, but that's not to say it won't change. So, if there's a room you really want, I would recommend going back and checking once a week or so (or more often, depending on how far out your cruise is).
ROYAL CARIBBEAN ROYAL UP
Once you've decided on your bid, you just scroll down and submit. You will then be asked for your personal information such as name, address, and the credit card you would like charged, should you win your bid.
PLEASE NOTE- Your bid can be accepted at any time. So while you have 48 hours before your cruise to cancel your bid, you cannot cancel it if it's been accepted. I've heard of people getting accepted just days after they bid, while still weeks out from their cruise. I just don't want you to think you have until two days before your cruise to back out. Once it's accepted, you are locked in.
If you win, you'll get an email somewhere between 24-48 hours before your cruise.
If you lost, you'll also get an email somewhere between 24-48 hours before your cruise.
I did use Royal Up to bid on an upgrade for my parent's stateroom when we went to Alaska in May. I bid the minimum amount, which was $300 per person, for a total of $600.
Two days before the cruise I received an email letting me know the bid was unsuccessful.
As you can see, you don't need to do anything extra. Your original booking remains in place, and any room you've already been assigned is still applicable.
TEN THINGS THAT NEED TO BE IN YOUR LUGGAGE BEFORE YOU GO TO DISNEYROYAL CARIBBEAN ROYAL UP SUCCESS
The success of your bid is going to depend on a few factors, the strongest of which would be the amount you bid and the time of sailing.
Peak season sailings will likely have more people placing bids, so a strong bid would probably be necessary for an upgrade win.
If your ship is sold out, you are probably still going to be able to bid. I have heard that Royal Caribbean holds back a certain amount of rooms for upgrade because they can take your bid, move you up a room category and then sell your room for full price.
So, even if your ship is booked solid, don't lose hope. If you're able to bid, do so.
If you don't bid, but wish you had, be sure and check at the port for an upgrade. I'm not sure what the price difference will be vs. bidding, but I do know this worked for us when
we upgraded to the Roy O. Disney suite on The Disney Fantasy.AN UPDATE ON OUR LATEST BID
We had placed a bid for a two bedroom suite on Adventure Of The Seas. After showing youtube videos to my kids of both rooms, they decided they'd rather have the Panoramic Family Suite we originally booked. I'll put the video of that room below.
So, I cancelled my bid, since it had not yet been accepted.
Once I got back from the cruise, I went in and looked at the next few cruises we have planned and changed our rooms so that instead of having two connecting rooms, we are now only in one, large, family room.
It's not as much space as two connecting rooms, but it does mean that I'll always be able to use Royal Up in the future, which you cannot do if you have two connecting rooms.
I'll continue to update this post to let you know how my bids go, and if we end up winning one.
A FEW DETAILS & FINAL THOUGHTS
If you go to the Royal Up site and your reservation and last name do not bring up a bid page, it means that you're not eligible to bid.
I'm not sure why this happens, but I believe it has something to do with the number of people in your room.
When we went on the Alaska cruise, I had a room with three people in it (myself and my two boys), and we were not able to request an upgrade. I believe it's because there were no more biddable rooms that could hold more than two people.
However, it's always good to check, and you definitely do not need to wait until you get an email from Royal Caribbean. You also do not need to wait for your TA to send you an email if you've used an agent to book your cruise. You're able to handle this entirely on your own.
You will get perks (if there are any) for the room you upgrade to, like Coastal Kitchen access on Oasis Class ships, a Royal Genie where applicable, etc.
You will NOT get double Crown & Anchor points if you bid up to a suite. In order to get the double points you must book your suite through the normal channels. Of course if you book a suite then bid up to a different suite (which is what I'm trying to do) you will get your double C&A points.
I hope this helps! If you have any questions. let me know. I'm always happy to help if I can.
If you have bid and won on Royal Up, I'd love to know, so please comment below and let us know your ship, sailing date, the room you had originally booked, the room you upgrade to, and how strong your bid was.
Thanks!
